Having recently been to an all-day seminar where a big deal was made about truth in art, maths, and the existence of truth at all, I've been prompted to think about truth in literature.

In almost every english class I've been in, I've heard someone ask 'why are we studying this? What's the point?' or 'how is this relevant to anything in our lives?' I believe the answer is simple - in every story or novel we read, we find a snippet of the past. We learn the thoughts of those who built our civilisation, or those who observed us as we rose. We learn truths.
